Come along to Lockwood Way’s three brewery & winery Taprooms as we celebrate the Lunar New Year on Saturday 21 January.

An all day family-friendly event, with plenty of fun activities for kids and adults alike, plus some delicious food and drink specials celebrating Chinese culture.

Chinese Calligraphy

Hackney Brewery have enlisted the service of awarding-winning calligrapher Mr. Jianchu Xu, the chairman of Chinese Poetry, Calligraphy and Painting Society in the UK, to offer a calligraphy session on Saturday from 1pm - 4pm.

In Chinese, calligraphy is referred to as Shufa, literally: the Way of Writing. Practising calligraphy is considered to be a way of cultivating one’s character.

Available for free on a first come, first serve basis, Mr Xu will hand write your name, giving you an introduction to the beauty of Chinese calligraphy. Then there’ll the be opportunity to practise for yourself!

Lantern Making & Zodiak Drawing

Alongside the calligraphy session from Mr Xu, there’ll be extra activities to keep the young ones entertained including Zodiac animal drawing and paper lantern making.

Lucky Red Envelope Lottery

Lunar New Year is the season of exchanging red envelopes filled with money, known as Ya Sui Qian, or "lucky money." We’ll be filling red envelopes with prizes from all three Taprooms on the estate, including bar tabs, beers, wines and a few fun surprises. Any time you spend £23 or over at the bar* (*Spend may differ at Renegade Urban Winery) you’ll receive a lucky red envelope with your prize inside.

Food & Drink Specials

All three taprooms will have a food trader serving up delicious grub throughout the day, look out for some Chinese inspired specials, including a special one-off bun from Wild Grains Bakery!

Bottles of Lucky Buddah will be available at Hackney’s High Hill Tap. A classic asian style Rice Lager brewed and bottled at the Qiandao Lake, China, with citrusy notes of lemon, grapefruit and wheat.

Can’t make it on Saturday the 21st? We’ll be running some of the extra activities (just not the calligraphy session) from Thursday to Sunday.
